Feeling guilty that I’m roughly as excited to potentially get m0ar $20 enterprise switches from the college surplus store as I am to see the person actually graduating from that college

The original plan was to also hang around for move out day because rich cunts throw out gaming PCs and getting hardware for free really lowers the cost of inference

But there will always be more move out days. In fact I should put a tool together that maps out a path for me to hit as many colleges as possible, prioritizing those with foreign student populations (can’t transport big shit) and rich kids (doesn’t care to transport big shit)

Public

@r000t Is this a normal thing? Colleges throwing out old computer hardware? I need to know this life strat.

Public

@wholemilk Students will throw out most of their things twice a year. Especially things like food and furniture. Rich kids will throw out gaming PCs and consoles.

The college itself will send old shit like office furniture and computer equipment/accessories to a surplus store. That part’s not gonna be universal but ~80% of the colleges I look up on Google, they got one.

That’s where my current core switch came from, a 48x1G+4x10G Juniper unit for $20.

@r000t how do you get the rich student stuff? Do they let randoms dumpster dive the campus trash cans? And how do you find about the college surplus stores? What times of year are best? I live near a state college so I would like to take advantage of it. Also I'm a burger , so Idk if that affects anything.

Public

@wholemilk honestly @zonk would know more, he’s the one who introduced me to the concept. There’s also a subreddit dedicated to dumpster diving and twice a year they post all the shit they’ve found around college campuses.

My understanding is that in most cases you will not need to actually get inside of and dig around dumpsters because most of the good shit is just put out on the curb.

Public

@r000t @zonk I'm worried about getting kicked out / arrested for loitering or something.

Public

@wholemilk @zonk I honestly doubt it. Especially if you wear hi-vis and don’t look like you’re doing anything nefarious. You’re also very unlikely to be the only person doing it.

Public
@r000t @wholemilk don't wear hi vis lol, that just attracts attention and makes you easy to identify. just go ahead and dumpster dive with latex gloves and you'll be fine
Public
@r000t @wholemilk there's a few tiers of it, depending on how bold you are and how much effort you want to put in. note that this is my experience in a college town with a pretty significant international population

the first is just hitting up goodwill because they'll have a million items donated to them that you can get for cheap

the next is the college surplus store, which departments will send all their junk to end of year, since grad students are graduating as well

the next is curb watching around apartment complexes. rich asians/arabs/indians tend to congregate in "luxury" apartment complexes, so you can just drive around and see what they throw out

the next is dumpster diving in the same areas

then you have the more risky stuff. the dorms. dumpster diving on campus has gotten me dirty looks by the staff but they haven't actually done anything about it, probably because i look like a student. if i didn't, they probably would have called the cops

and the riskiest are the donation bins literally inside the dorms. every dorm has a massive area on the ground floor with a goodwill donation pile. the university will transport that stuff to goodwill for free at the end of the semester. i piggybacked into the dorms by just waiting outside and going in and ruffling through the pile. this actually got the cops called on me by some administration cocksucker and i had to bail. i wouldn't recommend this to anyone but students
