@r000t to be fair, the article says it's cringeworthy for the person asking for the raise, and I agree - it's never comfortable. The title makes it seem like she meant that she cringes when she sees other people ask for a raise, and I didn't get the sense that this is the case here.
She also mentioned that she refused getting a raise she was offered during the financial crisis.
